December Cougar of the Month

Monroe W. is currently in the second grade at The New School. This year marks her fifth year attending the school.

"Monroe is a vivacious person and carries this enthusiasm into her learning day. She is mindful, kind and considerate. Monroe truly embodies Cougar P.R.I.D.E." — Melodi Jones, Second Grade teacher

What activities are you involved in and outside of school?

I take dance lessons after school. We do jazz, tap and ballet, but my favorite is jazz because we do a lot of fun things and cool tricks.

What is special about being a student at The New School?

Our teachers help us understand our lessons. They help us by having us ask a lot of questions and practicing the things we learn.

Who is a teacher you admire at The New School and why?

I’d say all the teachers that I’ve had, and the enrichment teachers because they make it so fun. We do a lot of experiments and learn about things like the states of matter.

What do you think is unique about students at The New School?

We get along and like to do so many fun things at recess, like run and play on the playground.

In second grade, we get to do the Holiday Store. [My classmates] are all trying to get everything done because we want to help children in need.

What has been your favorite class at The New School?

Social studies and science because in social studies I love to write, and I am excited to do science experiments. I also like math!

Which of our school values are most important to you?

I think "preparation" from Cougar P.R.I.D.E. because I think it's good to be prepared for class so that you’re ready to follow directions and ready to learn.

What is your favorite thing about The New School?

We get to learn about fun things in different ways. We don’t always do the same things, sometimes we write, sometimes we do experiments, and we do different projects. I also love that whenever I get out of the car every day [the administration team] greets me, it makes me feel good inside!

The New School Cougar of the Month features one student each month, nominated by their teacher, who positively reflects the school's mission, vision and values.
