About Our Head of School

Head of School Announcement from Edward Prewitt — Board of Trustees:

Dear New School Community,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Nancy Lang as the 4th Head of School of The New School.  Mrs. Lang will begin her tenure on July 1, 2019.

Nancy is a proven leader with a rich history of building meaningful relationships. Her commitment and vision to foster a premier educational experience for students, positioned her as our top choice.

Receiving a BA in Mathematics from Cornell University and an MS in Mathematics from the University of Massachusetts, Mrs. Lang began her professional career as a Commissioned Officer in the US Air Force.  She then made the move to education, teaching middle school mathematics at The Miami Valley School in Dayton, OH.  There, she taught math and served as an advisor through the “Skills for Adolescence” curriculum and coached the MATHCOUNTS team and the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams.  It was at this stage of her career that she found teacher as her calling.

Nancy returned to her home of Andover, MA in 1993 and continued her career at Phillips Academy Andover, where she stayed for 22 years.  At Andover, she steadily was promoted from instructor in Mathematics to Assistant Dean to Associate Dean of Faculty.  She taught all levels of math from Algebra I through the 600 AP BC Calculus courses.  She coached cross country and track and field, and served as a dormitory house counselor and advisor.  She coordinated the accreditation process for Phillips Academy.  Eventually, she directed the teaching fellow program:  a program designed to train and support first year teachers.  She managed budgets and awarded professional development grants.  She coordinated orientation and training for faculty and administrators.

Most recently, Nancy became the Head of School of Journeys School of Teton Science Schools (TSS) in Jackson, Wyoming in 2015.  At TSS, which is a PK – 12 International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, Nancy has lead the school through a successful strategic plan.  She has had three consecutive years of 100% parent and faculty participation in annual fund; three consecutive years of reaching or surpassing fundraising goals and she has met or exceeded her operating budget targets.  She has engaged enrollment management and market research consultants to build a Strategic Enrollment Management Plan for sustainability of her school in a unique market.

Nancy is a firm believer that independent schools must take a leadership role in partnering with communities to improve quality and transformative education experiences for all children.  She is enthusiastic about the move to Fayetteville and will move here Summer 2019.  As avid sportswoman, Nancy, her husband Corbin and their three children enjoy hiking, skiing, running and all outdoor activities.

I would personally like to thank all members of the Board of Trustees and the Search Committee for their time, insight, and due diligence throughout this search process. On behalf of the entire Board, I would also like to thank the administrators, teachers and parents who participated in the interview process. Finally, we are grateful for the interminable assistance and guidance of our search consultant John Littleford of John Littleford and Associates.

Sincerely,

Edward E. Prewitt
