December 14, 2020 | Vol. 7 No. 9 THE NEW SCHOOL Nancy Lang | Head of School Julie Lythcott-Haims is a former corporate lawyer and Stanford dean. She has written two books - How to Raise an Adult and Real American - with a third on the way - Your Turn: How to Be an Adult. Her first book is about how to avoid the overparenting trap and prepare your child for success, while her second is a memoir on growing up Black and biracial in white spaces.
Jack Sweeney | Director of Enrollment and Admission To think we are a week away from winter break and there is so much to be thankful for, especially in the world we live today. Each day presents new challenges, and often new opportunities. An inspirational mentor of mine, who passed away a few years ago, would remind me to “Always, remember Jack: this is not your fault, but it is now your problem.” I can relate this now to the pandemic, which I know was something that I could not prevent beyond a personal level, but it is something that we all have had to, and continue to, navigate and live through.
Mary Sweeney | Head of Early Childhood It’s that time of year! It’s Holiday Season. As children get older they look forward to the holidays and the fun that comes with them. I know I do! The festive atmosphere always brings so much joy. Teaching in the month of December was always my favorite. I loved teaching about the holidays around the world to my PreK students and the different meanings and celebrations that take place at this time of year. However, this time also brings about many questions for educators.
Jade House | Head of K-6 As I reflect on the school year, I keep thinking, “Wow, it is December all ready!” It seems like just yesterday we were prepping for the beginning of the school year and now we are prepping for all of our holiday celebrations. In the K-6 program, we have been learning and discovering different holidays, traditions, and customs. How do educators teach these lessons while remaining unbiased?
J.R. Neiswender | Head of Upper School In Upper Schools all around the country, the three weeks between Thanksgiving break and the winter holidays are filled with community service projects, class activities, club meetings, and basketball games. This bustling activity is no different here at TNS. In addition to these community-building events, the month of December also brings the final projects, tests, and assessments that wrap up our academic semester.
Jonny Schremmer | Arts Director The other day my 15-year-old son got ready to practice a particularly difficult sonatina on the piano and said to me, “Please don’t clap and say it was beautiful when I’m done.” I wasn’t sure how to respond to this strange request, so I just agreed and left the room, secretly tying a gag around my mouth. As a teacher (and parent), sometimes the key to survival is knowing when to say nothing. NEWS AT THE NEW SCHOOL Coming soon... The New School Rewind will premiere January 2021.
