November 16, 2020 | Vol. 7 No. 8 THE NEW SCHOOL Nancy Lang | Head of School I grew up in Massachusetts. My husband grew up in Wyoming. Both teachers at a residential school in New England, where weekends were full of coaching and dorm counseling, we spent 10 months a year completely immersed in school. Every June and every August, we piled into our truck and drove across the country. Our children grew up with long road trips as the norm.
Sadie Schabdach | Advancement Committee Chair Like many parents of my generation, I first encountered The New School via a Google search. For those of you who are also NWA transplants, you may share a similar story. For my husband Matthew and I, it was February 2017, and he was being recruited for a position in Marketing at Walmart. Neither of us had ever stepped foot in Arkansas nor did we know anyone locally. Despite our lack of familiarity with the area, we were committed to finding the absolute best school.
Mary Sweeney | Head of Early Childhood Every day, our teachers spend time reading to your students. This daily routine is one of the things I miss most about being a classroom teacher! Nowadays, I try to make time at least once a month to read to our students and share with them some of my favorite children’s books. During this month’s classroom reading, I was asked by students in one class if they could keep my books and “reread” them. We see this a lot with our young children where they want to hear a story over and over.
Jade House | Head of K-6 With school breaks around the corner, it is more important than ever for your child to continue to read every day. Many of us have heard the phrase, “Practice makes perfect.” This is the same phrase in reading comprehension. Giving your child the opportunity to read and reread passages or texts every day over a course of a week, students improve accuracy, fluency and reading comprehension.
J.R. Neiswender | Head of Upper School In the spirit of full disclosure, I must share with you something that may not be a tremendously popular opinion: I have always been a big fan of Thanksgiving. Maybe it’s because my birthday always falls at that time of year. Maybe it’s because I actually enjoy eating turkey. I don’t know what it is, but I always find myself oddly disappointed when I walk into a store at the beginning of November and watch the bags of Halloween candy get immediately replaced on the shelves by candy canes and Christmas wrapping paper. I think to myself, ‘Hey - are we forgetting something here, folks?’
David Ferrell | Athletics Director We’ve had a lot of exciting things happen in TNS Athletics this year! In addition to successful Volleyball and Tennis seasons, Cross Country has wrapped up, and we had a runner compete at the STATE Meet. Emma Caviness finished 21st in the State in 1A Cross Country.
