January 18, 2021 | Vol. 7 No. 10 THE NEW SCHOOL Nancy Lang | Head of School “‘Life is understood backwards, even though we have to live it forwards’ as Soren Kierkegaard taught us.” This is the opening line from a session for heads of school that I attended this week. The speaker was Lou Salza, an educator with over 40 years of experience who claims that he is 2-3 years past his “best used by date!” Of course, it’s often these leaders with their unique balance of wisdom and humility who inspire us the most. Lou reminded us that “while school-age children make up only 17% of our current population, they are 100% of our future.”
Jack Sweeney | Director of Advancement I hope you had the opportunity to read Nancy’s message this week about resetting tuition for the 2021-2022 school year. We have reset tuition so you can rethink your possibilities and re-enroll for the 2021-2022 academic year. It is that time of year when we are focused on the single-most important process ensuring the school’s financial stability: re-enrollment.
Mary Sweeney | Head of Early Childhood On the first day back from the holidays, I heard a child say as they entered the door, ”I love my school”. This is exactly what teachers and parents at The New School love to hear. When children and families are happy and feel safe, true learning happens.
Jade House | Head of K-6 January is a time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. With another year battling COVID-19, many of our memories have been clouded with anxiety and lockdowns. Despite the pandemic, we are still able to find positives within our lives and our school.
J.R. Neiswender | Head of Upper School While most of my time is spent serving The New School community as the Head of the Upper School, I am also fortunate each day to get to work with a group of our students as a history teacher as well. Staying engaged with our students in this way and working alongside our faculty in the Upper School keeps me continually thinking about the best practices of teaching.
David Ferrell | Athletics Director We are so excited about the accomplishments of our athletics teams and athletes so far this year! We have finished every sport we have started, so far, and the basketball season has been going great. Remember: Tuesday, January 19, is a Cougar Spirit Day.
