March 1, 2021 | Vol. 7 No. 13 THE NEW SCHOOL Nancy Lang | Head of School This week’s Cougar Chronicle highlights what I would call the “true fabric of TNS.” Each blog post is relevant to parents of students of all ages. Mary Sweeney writes about “Conscious Discipline,” our approach to discipline as learning in ECE. When discipline is more about learning than about punishment, it is more effective and enduring. Both Jade House and J.R. Neiswender write about the evolution and importance of reading as critical to lifelong learning.
Jack Sweeney | Director of Advancement Today is March 1st and to think almost a year ago, our whole world was turned upside down. Everything in our lives changed from wearing masks, to social distancing, to distance learning and much more. Our community has been resilient, made changes to our everyday lives and come together to keep The New School open. Yay to all of us! Mary Sweeney | Head of Early Childhood One of the favorites used in our young toddler classroom is: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star – for this ritual, it is important to be at your child’s level Twinkle, twinkle little star, What a wonderful child you are! With bright eyes and nice round cheeks, A talented person from head to feet. Twinkle, twinkle little star What a wonderful child you are!
Jade House | Head of K-6 Dr. Seuss week and Read Across America is March 1st - 5th. We have many activities planned, including our favorite spirit dress up days, to celebrate the love of reading. Reading is a skill that affects all subjects and successes throughout life.
J.R. Neiswender | Head of Upper School
I love hearing about our lower school and ECE students getting excited about storytime, loving to participate in their reading groups, and developing important vocabulary and writing skills as they read and learn throughout their elementary years. These practices are critically important not only to the formative stages of their academic work as lower school students, but also to the long-term development of the skills necessary for success at the upper school level.
Jonny Schremmer | Arts Director As we begin the official month of spring, I thought we’d focus on our fabulous art teachers who inspire TNS students to create beautiful work each and every day. Meet Hunter, TNS Cougar of the Month Hunter W. is currently in the fourth grade at The New School. He has attended the school since he was two years old.
“In my 20+ years of education, Hunter is truly one of the most thoughtful students that I have taught. He never fails to catch the door to hold it open for teachers or peers. He offers to pick up breakfast for his classmates in the morning (He calls it Hunter-Dash), and he pays attention and anticipates where help might be needed during class. Each day, he shows small acts of kindness. He truly has a giving heart.” - Christy Koprovic, Middle School teacher Meet Ms. Rosie Sonneborn, TNS Teacher Rosie Sonneborn is in her first year of teaching at The New School and her sixteenth year as an educator. In addition to teaching Spanish, she also sponsors the Yoga Club and Domestic Sciences Club.
“This year in Spanish 4 has been full of growth due to Ms. Rosie. One of my favorite things about how Ms. Rosie teaches is that she doesn’t take the easy way out by explaining things in English. She will continue to explain it in Spanish until we understand which has helped me tremendously. This year with Ms. Rosie has fostered my love for Spanish and I couldn’t be more grateful!” - Marleigh H., current student. CALENDARS
