March 15, 2021 | Vol. 7 No. 14
Nancy Lang | Head of School
There are a lot of things floating around social media and news outlets about where we were one year ago and where we are today. The anniversary of significant events, especially the first anniversary, can evoke a wide variety of emotions. Think back to your child’s first birthday! It can be helpful and healthy to talk through the stories and memories with family, friends, and colleagues.
Jack Sweeney | Director of Advancement
Spring Break is a week away and all I can think about is where we were last year at this time. As a school, we were just beginning to figure out the challenges of distance learning, working from home and wondering how this pandemic would affect our community. For the most part, we all were trying to figure out what COVID-19 was and many people figured it would not last long. Now we know more about COVID-19, many of us have been or will get vaccinated and we see light at the end of the tunnel.
Mary Sweeney | Head of Early Childhood
This time last year, our whole world started to feel anxious about many unknowns with the onset of Covid-19. Everyone’s life changed in ways we never could foresee. One year later, I have learned a lot about myself and trying to parent through a different lens.
We are on the final countdown to Spring Break! We have noticed a slight student uptick of negative behavior and anxiousness about the change of routine. This is all normal with the looming year anniversary of COVID in Arkansas, as well as knowing our world is changing yet again.
J.R. Neiswender | Head of Upper School
It’s no secret that the ‘business of school’ is academics. Our mission compels us to prepare our students for higher-level thinking, analytical challenges, and intellectual pursuits for a lifetime of learning and growing. And we do that successfully every day. But for our students, each day at school is much more than that as well.
David Ferrell | Athletics Director
This time of year is always a fun time in athletics! There’s nothing quite like postseason basketball in Arkansas high school basketball, especially the “small schools".
Support Local Businesses With Gift Card Donation
After a difficult year for small businesses, we are wanting to support our local community by collecting local business gift card donations ($25-$50) for our Spring Auction Community Baskets.
Feel free to support any local business of your choice (restaurant, shop, other merchants, etc.).
Please drop off your donation at the front desk by April 5th.
Collecting Wine and Beer Pull Donations
In honor of The New School's 50th anniversary, we are collecting 50 bottles of red/white wine ($25 value min.) and 50 six-packs of craft beer for our virtual wine and beer pull.
For your convenience, we will have parent volunteers at drop-off on March 16 and 17 to collect your donation. However, we will continue to accept donations until April 12th - just bring it to the front desk!
TNS Sophomore Designs Community Tee
When art students were given the opportunity to design a t-shirt for the Cub House, sophomore Maria La Porte was inspired by the welcoming community at The New School.
"I’ve always found that, at this school, community is one of the top priorities. TNS is always finding new ways to connect the school together which I believe to be why it’s so important to me. So I wanted to translate this over to my t-shirt design!“
Save The Date - Spring Auction April 19-23
This spring, we will celebrate our arts programs with Arts Week at the same time as our Spring Auction (April 19-23). Both events will be a week-long celebration of our art, drama, and music programs with live and video performances, as well as, virtual art shows.
The Spring Auction will be centered around The New School’s values - Curiosity, Character and Community. We will have some great auction items including class baskets, local business items, paddle raises and plenty of other fun items available for bidding.
The New School Summer Camp 2021
This summer, The New School will be holding a traditional style day camp for children in the area that have just completed K-6. Campers will enjoy themed weeks such as Splish Splash, The Great Outdoors, Under the Sea, and so many more as well as one to two outdoor centered field trips. Campers will participate in on-campus recreational activities, recess, tech time, and structured free time to socialize with their friends in a safe environment.
We will be keeping groups relatively small to ensure the safety and wellness of our campers and staff. Masks will be mandatory as well as social distancing within groups.
