FROM DR. GROESBECK

Dear New School Community,

We write to you together today to look back at the year and look forward to Arts Week.

So many wonderful things have happened in the Arts on campus this year. A School that has a wandering minstrel - our Troy Schremmer who delights young and old with songs and movement - is a place where art is valued all day long!

In our curriculum, we have art from the earliest ages through the Upper School grades. Christina Mariotti and Natalie Ramsey bring a richness to our youngest students in ECE because they themselves are professional artists. Katie Parker always supplements creativity in K - 4 arts classes with earnest art education.

In the Middle and Upper Schools, students experience Art with Shelby Graff, textile designer, and Aaron Giles, graphic designer, supplemented by courses in photography and media by Austin Farnam. All these artists are specialists and bring enthusiasm and energy to the students.

In the Theatre Arts, we are lucky to have a professional actor in Jonny Schremmer and a New York trained costume technician in Samanthe Burrow who allow our students to study drama both in class and in productions like The Magical Forest, Matilda and Seussical. Bringing out the best in each student, we are the lucky recipients at the school in watching the performances.

Our music selections rival much larger schools with The Morning Jam, Jazz Ensemble, Ukulele Ensemble and Rock Band, instrumental instruction and innovation with musicians Austin Farnam, Becky Adams and Jacob Campbell. These professional musicians challenge our students to find their instrument and develop a love of music.

Our students can also participate in after-school arts by taking dance classes with Michelle LeBlanc, piano lessons with Luz Delpilar, guitar and ukulele with Will Playford, drumming with Matt Beach, and art studio with Katie Terry.

All told, there is an affirmation at The New School that Art is integral to an holistic, 21st Century Education.

Put April 14th at George's and April 18th - 26 on your calendar to celebrate Arts Week at TNS!

Yours in the Arts,

Dr. Susan R. Groesbeck

Head of School, Interim

Combatting Student Anxiety: "A School's Strengths-Based Approach"

As we begin our charge toward the end of the school year and standardized testing, you may notice some of your students are starting to feel anxious about a variety of topics. The good news is that for most adolescents just talking about their feelings with a trusted adult who listens and understands can make a huge difference. Please read this article about anxiety that was recently included in the NAIS Bulletin. If you are interested in learning more about how to help prevent or manage student anxiety please contact Cailey Gray
